Services
Development projects
Is your company about to embark on a bold project? Need an experienced facilitator? I’ve helped small firms launch their business in a new country and led a team through one of the largest publisher mergers in the world.

Training & tech support
Do you need support with complex software or processes? Or maybe the volunteers at your association need an introduction to managing your e-zine? Bring in a seasoned expert in publishing tech, ops and comms to help out.

Translation, text, digi design
I translate books from Finnish to English (or vice versa), mainly darkly hilarious band biographies so far. I can also proofread or edit your manuscript in either language. I’ll build you a classy website or design compelling digital content for you.

Help for indie authors
Keen to publish a book but don’t know how it works? What does publishing, selling and marketing a book entail? Why is typesetting so expensive? What’s the right book format for you? I’ll help you figure out what you need (and don’t need).

“If you can’t explain it simply
you don’t understand it well enough.”

Hi, I’m Salla
I founded Otavatar after a decade-plus as a tech expert in the creative industries. I’ve specialised in the publishing systems and processes of the book and music industries. But between us: these fields are like any other, at least in that common sense and a bit of intellectual curiosity beat knowledge of esoteric minutiae every time. (Though the minutiae is essential.)
Today, I also work actively as a translator and website designer. I’m very carefully considering tackling a PhD.
Back in the day, I worked as a music journalist, event producer and tour manager. A museum guide, removal lady and marine electrician’s assistant. Mama, I’m a Rolling Stone, or something like that, right? The best thing about running your own business is the freedom and duty to help wherever help is needed.
*Having a Master’s in the History of Science, I should point out that this quote is of fairly dubious authenticity.
It’s the company motto nevertheless.
